Pronouns 101

Have you ever asked yourself “did I use the “correct” pronoun for that person”? This Pronouns 101 workshop will help you feel more comfortable in any situation! In this workshop, you will learn how to safely ask someone their pronouns, break down neo pronouns and experience a safe space to ask your questions about pronouns.  Through interactive videos, zoom polls, and pronoun use practice, we will help you become a pro at pronouns!

Speaker: Azisa (Zi) Todd was born and raised in Oakland and uses she/her/hers/they pronouns, or simply Zi. Much of their community work started young when Azisa was a Girl Scout and continued into high school. While in high school, she did the usual queer things like co-organize the Queer Straight Alliance and Feminist Club. After, Zi went on to undergrad, served as a member then director of BlaQue, UCLA’s Black LGBTQ+ organization. Zi hosted events, workshops, and study sessions up until the pandemic hit. Having since graduated from UCLA, she decided to jump back into academia and pursue a master’s in public health at San Francisco State University with an emphasis in community health education. Azisa’s long-term goal after completing the MPH program is to pursue a DrPH or PhD in public health and teach what they have learned to college-level students.

Azisa is excited to be the Lead Trainer and Events Coordinator position at the San Mateo County Pride Center because of their background in organizing and hosting events for the queer community in LA and the various workshops Zi helped develop; doing this form of work is both rewarding and joyful for Zi. Outside of academia and work, she is learning how to roller skate and watch a lot of anime.

Cost: Free for SMCBA members, $15 for Non-members. Cost includes 1.5 hour of Elimination of Bias MCLE credit.

Please join us on Friday, April 28, 2023, at Cañada College for our annual Law Day event. Law Day is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law.  Law Day underscores how law and the legal process contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share.  Law Day also provides an opportunity to recognize the role of courts in this democracy and the importance of jury service to maintaining the integrity of the courts. This year, our speakers are Hon. Renee C. Reyna, Criminal Defense Attorney M. Gabriela Guraiib, and Marriage & Family Therapist & Retired Probation Officer Lori Smiley-Klingler. 

Hon. Renee C. Reyna
San Mateo County Superior Court Judge

Judge Renee C. Reyna was appointed to the Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo, in September 2021 by Governor Gavin Newsom. Prior to her appointment, she served as a San Mateo County Court Commissioner since 2019. Before serving as a judicial officer, she worked as a Senior Staff Attorney at the California Supreme Court and as a Staff Attorney at the San Mateo County Superior Court. She started her career as a criminal defense attorney in Placer County, where she primarily represented indigent clients. Judge Reyna currently presides over Family Law cases for the San Mateo County Superior Court.

M. Gabriela Guraiib
Criminal Defense Attorney

Gaby Guraiib was born and educated in Tucuman, Argentina. She graduated from the National University of Tucuman with a juris doctor and became a practicing attorney in in Argentina. After immigrating to the United States, she became a licensed to practice law in California. She worked as a Deputy Public Defender in Tulare County with prior law clerking background where she gained experience in misdemeanors and felonies as well as juvenile defense. She relocated to San Mateo County in 2014.

Lori Smiley-Klingler
Marriage & Family Therapist & Retired Probation Officer

Lori is a retired Probation Officer of 28 years who supervised juvenile and adult offenders. Lori is also a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist who now operates a private practice in the bay area. For her last eight years, she worked in the Probation’s DV unit with domestic violence offenders, victims and various service providers as a supervising probation officer and a Probation Service Manager. In 2020, she was honored with the Barbara Hammerman award for her advocacy and leadership in domestic violence prevention.

The high school students and teacher-advisors who participated in this year’s Mock Trial Competition will be honored guests at our annual Law Day event. We invite SMCBA members to sponsor the luncheon cost of a student(s) or a school. All Sponsors will be acknowledged in the Law Day Program & in the May/June Here-Say.

San Mateo County Trial Lawyers Association Scholarship Program Presentation
Each year, the San Mateo County Trial Lawyers Association presents scholarship awards to three high school seniors who wish to pursue a career in the law or criminal justice careers at this event. The San Mateo County Trial Lawyers Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of justice, preservation of the jury system, and the protection of the rights of the consumers and injury victims.

To sponsor a student, it is $55 each student, you also have the option to sponsor a school & receive 2 entry tickets at $500, or to sponsor just a school and NOT attend the event it is $400, contact the SMCBA at events@smcba.org.

Beginning January 1, 2021, the San Mateo County Superior Court made a significant change in the way it handles civil cases by converting from a master calendar to a single assignment system. Judge Danny Y. Chou will talk about what this change means for civil litigants and share his recommendations, tips, and tricks for attorneys under the Court’s “new” single assignment system.

Who: The Honorable Danny Y. Chou was nominated by Governor Gavin Newsom on February 17, 2023, for appointment to the Court of Appeal, First Appellate District, Division Five. He is currently a judge with the San Mateo County Superior Court, where he is one of five judges assigned to handle all civil cases. Before his appointment to the bench, Judge Chou served as an Assistant County Counsel at the Santa Clara County Counsel’s Office. At the County Counsel’s Office, he was the lead public trial lawyer and lead appellate lawyer in People v. ConAgra Grocery Products Co., which resulted in a $305 million settlement to be used to clean up residential lead paint.

He also served as the Chief of Complex and Special Litigation and the Chief of Appellate Litigation at the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office, where he was part of the trial and appellate teams that successfully challenged California’s statutory and constitutional bans on same sex marriage. In addition, he has served as a supervising staff attorney for a Justice at the California Supreme Court, a staff attorney at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, an associate at Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk and Rabkin, and a law clerk for a judge at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
