Ms. Gallo will discuss common disputes involving civil discovery, and ways to protect your clients from a motion to compel and discovery sanctions.

Ms. Gallo has extensive experience including serving as Research Attorney for the Law and Motion Departments of the Alameda and San Mateo County Superior Courts, giving her a unique perspective on court process. Her responsibilities included all discovery motions as well as mediating ongoing complex discovery disputes. She has served regularly as a Pro Tem Settlement Judge, Court Ordered Arbitrator and as a Private Mediator. As a trial attorney, Ms. Gallo managed a full caseload of personal injury, product liability and commercial litigation matters.

Ms. Brautigam and Mr. Bartholomew will discuss tax issues that frequently arise in dissolution matters.

Ms. Brautigam owns and operates Brautigam & Co., a well-regarded CPA firm in Sacramento.  Ms. Brautigam is a CPA with an MBA in Taxation and over 40 years of tax experience.  She holds Series 7 and Series 66 licenses, is a registered representative with H.D. Vest Investment Services, and is a Personal Financial Specialist.  Beverly is a Past President of the California CPA Education Foundation and has received the Award for Instructor Excellence from the California CPA Education Foundation.  She has also taught in the Masters in Taxation program at Golden Gate University and has qualified as an expert in several California counties.

Mr. Bartholomew is a founding partner of Bartholomew & Wasznicky LLP, a Sacramento based family law firm.  He was in the first group of Certified Family Law Specialists in California, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.  He is the co-founder of the Sacramento Collaborative Practice Group and the founding president of Collaborative Practice of California.

Please join the Labor & Employment Section on Thursday, November 7, 2019, for a presentation on Recent Developments in LGBTQ Employment Discrimination Law with David Nahmias, Esq. from Impact Fund.

Laws prohibiting sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination have shifted rapidly in recent years. This training will describe the current state of federal and California law protecting LGBTQ workers and workers with HIV/AIDS. Participants will learn how to recognize and eliminate explicit and implicit biases that harm LGBTQ people in the workplace, including inappropriate name and pronoun usage, unlawful invasions of privacy, and lack of access to gender-consistent facilities. The training will also identify practical considerations for lawyers when advising LGBTQ, especially transgender clients, and provide tips for ensuring an inclusive and affirming attorney-client relationship.​

Our speaker, David Nahmias, is a Law Fellow at the Impact Fund, a Berkeley-based non-profit legal organization that supports social justice through strategic litigation and advocacy, training, and grant-making. He leads Impact LGBTQ, the Impact Fund’s initiative to expand the community of advocates for low-income LGBTQ workers

The Diversity Committee is proud to present its award-winning 11th Annual Speaker series.

Our Guest Speaker this year is Justice Martin L. Jenkins. Justice Jenkins was named by Governor Gavin Newsome on Monday, January 14, 2019 as his judicial appointments secretary. Justice Jenkins stepped down from the bench to help shape California’s future judiciary by vetting candidates for vacancies in the state’s 1,800-judge appellate and trial courts.

Justice Jenkins joined the United States Department of Justice as a Trial Attorney, and was assigned to the Civil Rights Division-Criminal Section. As a lawyer in the Civil Rights Division, he prosecuted racial violence and police misconduct cases for several years. In 1989, Justice Jenkins was appointed by Governor George Deukmejian to the Oakland Municipal Court. In 1992, he was elevated by Governor Pete Wilson to the Alameda County Superior Court and in 1995, became the Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Division. Justice Jenkins was confirmed to his position as an Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeal, First Appellate District, Division Three, in 2008 where he served for 11 years.

Ruskus, Esq., CFLS, AAML.  Ms. Prioste and Ms. Ruskus will provide tips and strategies for negotiating and drafting pre-marital and post-marital agreements.

Ms. Prioste is a partner in the Family Law Group at Lakin Spears LLP.  She is a Certified Family Law Specialist and a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) and the International Academy of Family Lawyers (IAFL). Her practice is devoted exclusively to family law. In addition to doing traditional divorce representation, Ms. Prioste is a mediator, acts as collaborative counsel in Collaborative Divorce cases and is a consulting counsel to mediations. She also prepares and negotiates premarital and postmarital agreements.  Ms. Prioste has been selected by her peers as among the top family lawyers in Northern California every year since 2004 and has frequently been named as one of the Northern California’s “Top 50 Women Lawyers” across all practice areas.

This presentation will explore the challenges employers face when complying with federal and state leave laws, including the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) and California’s Pregnancy Disability Leave Law (PDL) and provide practical guidance for handling leave issues.

Jasmine L. Anderson is a Senior Attorney at Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete, LLP.  She defends employers in all aspects of employment law matters before federal and state courts and administrative agencies. Jasmine handles a variety of claims involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, failure to accommodate, wage and hour, denial of leave, and other employment law issues. Description: This class will focus on the use of HEMS standards, and walk through various case scenarios.  

Presenter Kathleen A. Durrans is a shareholder of Aaron, Riechert, Carpol & Riffle, APC, and a Certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Trust, and Probate Law. Ms. Durrans is also a certified mediator and is a member of the San Mateo Probate ADR Program Panel. Ms. Durrans has been practicing in the areas of Estate Planning, Trust, and Probate Law since 1999. She is a graduate of the University of San Francisco School of Law, where she graduated Cum Laude. She was a member of the McAuliffe Honor Society and University of San Francisco Law Review. In 1998, she received the American Jurisprudence Award in Family Wealth Transfer Taxation.

Presenter Krista Conover is the Managing Director, Trust & Fiduciary Services of Boston Private. Ms. Conover brings more than a decade of trust and investment experience. Prior to joining Boston Private in 2004, Ms. Conover practiced law in San Jose, assisting clients to achieve their estate planning and business objectives. Prior to practicing law, Ms. Conover worked as a personal banker. Ms. Conover received her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from University of California, Davis. She also received a JD from Santa Clara University’s School of Law. Ms. Conover is an active member of the California State Bar, the Silicon Valley Bar Association, the Financial Planning Forum and the San Francisco and Santa Clara County Estate Planning Councils.
