SMCBA’s Public Interest Law section promotes the interests of the members who address the legal needs and rights of the poor, minorities, victims of abuse, persons with disabilities, the homeless, and other disadvantaged populations within San Mateo County, and provides a forum to educate and involve the entire Bar in issues affecting the public interest.
Topics include but are not limited to civil rights, civil liberties, environmental protection, human rights, immigration, consumer protection, employees’ rights, elder law, juvenile law, family law, guardianship, landlord/tenant law, disability issues, and non-profit formation, representation, IP, tax, and employment law.
Section members meet regularly with skilled practitioners, legal scholars, judges, and agency representatives to discuss developments in relevant fields and practice pointers to enable all members to successfully engage in public interest legal work.
