Please join the Family Law Section on Friday, June 14, 2019, for a presentation on Intimate Partner Abuse by Melissa Gibbs of Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA). Intimate partner violence cases can be some of the most difficult cases to litigate. Many victims require assistance with a constellation of related yet distinct issues. Dynamics of power and control can permeate the proceedings. Trauma responses of victims can be confusing or misunderstood. This program will demystify intimate partner abuse, discuss recent case law involving DVPA actions, and provide an overview of CORA’s services and other resources available to assist survivors, batterers, and families experiencing violence.
Melissa is the Manager of Legal Services at CORA (Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse) where she started as a staff attorney litigating family law cases on behalf of survivors of domestic violence. Melissa’s interest is in the intersection of civil and criminal cases and is passionate about supporting survivors to navigate the criminal justice system as a victim-witness. Melissa regularly trains and mentors pro bono attorneys through a collaborative domestic violence pro bono project, is co-Chair of the Legal Process Committee (a subcommittee of the San Mateo County Domestic Violence Council), and is active in state-wide public policy research and advocacy through the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence. As a San Mateo County native Melissa enjoys supporting and giving back to her community.
